This Sunday will be my second time volunteering at the Wellington SPCA Cat run. Yes, it can be smelly and gross at times (eww, poo!) but most of the time you just go around making sure they have enough to eat and water to drink. The rest of the time you can spend dishing out your love to all different kinds of cats! This little gal up here was with her two sisters waiting to be adopted, I'm sure they'll all be gone now - but she was so smoochy! At first, she was shy, but then I gave her lots of cuddles and she ended up being very playful and giving me kisses. Here are a few other cats I had the pleasure of meeting a few weeks ago!

All this gorgeous girl would do was eat! Her face was stuffed in a bowl the entire 2 hours I was there - but she was also very cuddly and gorgeous. 

This one reminded me of my boy Zinzan (named after the All Black Rugby player in 1997), very smoochy and strong! He nuzzled me until I was covered in fluff. 

I can't wait to meet the cats that will be there this time, and dish out my love and affection to them. It's quite selfish of me - I miss my cats so I've volunteered to play with these lovely ones who aren't wanted anymore. I think it's quite sad how many adult cats are there are, it seems people only want kittens. If I could, I would adopt probably five adult cats and become a cat lady.

Sweat. Part 2.


Shall we start to focus on the 20% exercise part now? I know you're dreading it... it hurts, it's painful, I hate sweating, I hate lugging all my stuff to and from work, I wish it were EASIER.

See the above statement. If it were easy, everyone would be fit and healthy and there wouldn't be an obesity 'epidemic' (I use this word in quotations as I believe the word 'epidemic' promotes a disease that is spreading, rather than laziness and lack of education. I understand that some people are addicted to food much the same way as Alcoholics, which is why it has been quoted as a disease, and I think that's just complete PC crap).

If you really want something, you will work for it. If not, or you have some mental blocks in your path, you must look them straight in the face, and climb over them, destroy them with a hammer/axe/chainsaw and step through a better person for facing those mental blocks. I know for a fact that I couldn't have lost weight without putting a full year of internal healing and faith into myself. I needed to figure out who I was before any of that other stuff would actually work.

This year happened in my second year of university. My grandmother had just passed away in the summer holidays, as had my aunt (both within 10 days of each other, one of cancer, the other of blood pressure related issues). When I went back to uni, I stayed with a friend who I now count among one of my best friends. I went along to Church with her for a few times. Not Christian Church, as I'd firmly believed I was an Atheist with spiritual tenancies. I didn't know there were actual Spiritualist churches who didn't force their ideologies on you and make you feel like a little person, until then. Throughout that year, I went to Church with my friend many times, working through the grief of the death of my gran (we were very close, and I still think of her frequently), and also discovering my own inner peace.

Inner peace. I think this has to be one of the most important reasons why I actually managed to lose the weight last year. After working through these mental issues, which had NOTHING to do with food (more about my complete lack of self-worth) I was able to put it out there that I wanted to lose weight. I wanted to become healthy. This is where the 'knowledge is power' also comes into play. As I said in part one, I was going to the gym, but I had no idea about calories in vs. calories out. In December 2010 I started educating myself about nutrition and exercise and everything I posted in part one.

Exercise: you don't need more calories to exercise, you just need to do it. Here are some steps I have always found helpful for fitting in exercise, and sticking to it:
  1. Schedule at least 3 times a week into your diary to go to the gym/go for a run/go for a walk/do that yoga DVD. If you can do it 4 times a week, hurrah! 5 times? Even BETTER. 
  2. Find an exercise that you actually enjoy! I started really getting into it when I was doing Combat classes - then I actually started doing kickboxing classes! I really loved it, and I loved the feeling of letting out the anger and frustration I had at myself! Now I'm loving Attack and Pump classes. In Attack, it's high intensity, fun and exhausting! In Pump, I feel strong, doing clean-and-presses with 10kg on the bar, doing squats with 14kg. Doing 800 reps in a class! 
  3. When you schedule your workouts, do NOT, under any circumstances (apart from health) not do it. Even if you're sore, still go to the gym and do a light low-intensity workout! You'll feel so good afterwards, and I'll bet you no one ever said they regretted their workout. 
Those days where you're sore, and cold, and don't want to do anything but lay around watching bad romantic comedies and stay in bed? I have them too. Usually it's because I don't have the motivation to get up and go for even a light walk, or the weather is horrible... let yourself take them, but only if you promise yourself that tomorrow you will go to the gym. You will get your burn on, and you will feel good afterwards!

Also, let yourself know that life happens - if you really can't get to the gym, don't beat yourself up about it! Tomorrow is another day, and you will get there. Fitness isn't an overnight achievement, it's something you have to work on your entire life.

Flicks.


I saw these liquid eyeliner flicks on Vanessa Jackman and decided to try them out. They're so simple and easy to do, and a little different. 

I got a pedicure with a friend yesterday and my god! I've been missing out... the fact that you can gossip with a friend while having your feet soaked and pampered and also having a massaging chair. It's like a little bit of heaven that I need to factor into my life monthly.

Roast Tomato Soup.



I was just thinking about winter soups yesterday, and dreaming up a roast tomato soup when the lovely Jo from A Cup of Jo posted this recipe! So simple and yummy. Would be amazing with fresh baked bread and butter.

Sweat. Part 1.

This past week I've been unable to go to the gym - I hate having a cold for this reason. But none the less, I've been patiently waiting it out drinking lemon, honey and ginger's, and getting plenty of rest. Hopefully this will be out of my system by Wednesday! 

In the meantime, I've been thinking of my workout routine, and I thought I'd share with you some of my tips for weight loss, strength, and above all inner confidence and self worth. 

When I started out on my weight loss journey in December 2010 (stupid time of year, I know!) I was 86kg (190lb) and a size 14-16 (US10-12, EU 42-44). From there to here, I'm now 73kg (3-6kg to go!) and a size 10 (US 6, EU 38). Down 13kg (29lb). 

So what I'm doing works. It's also hard. It takes a lot of planning, inner strength, inspiration, and above all, goal setting. 

Weight loss is 70% nutrition, 20% exercise, 10% planning and education. I'm going to start this part with the education. 

I was going to the gym from my second year of uni (after I'd put on the fresher 5kg)... and I'd go, workout on the bike and cross trainer, see that I'd burned 600cal and say YAY! I get to eat more tonight! 

No. 

Losing weight is a math game. You have to know your numbers. You have to know the numbers that are going in and coming out of your body. To lose weight, you must have more calories being burned by your body than coming in. The general rule of thumb is 500cal less than your AMR (Active Metabolic Rate). You will then lose 1lb in a week. 

I tend to work off of my BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate). This is the number of calories your body would burn if you were in a coma and your hair and skin are growing, your heart is beating, and your lungs are breathing. You can calculate yours here. Mine is 1570 at a height of 5'9" and 160lb, age 22. 

Now, to figure out your AMR, you times this number by how active you are on a daily level... as follows: 

1.1 - Office worker, sit at a desk all day and don't move a lot 
1.2 - Teacher, on feet a lot, walking around 
1.3 - Gym instructor, moderate activity for most of the day 
1.4 - Heavy activity most of the day, construction worker etc. 

If you're between two of these, times by 1.15, 1.25 etc, as I am - I'm an Executive Assistant, an office job, but I have to rush around a lot. So my AMR is 1805 calories per day. 

So I could easily eat 1600-1800 cal per day and maintain my weight, which I have done from June last year up until the beginning of this month (then I started losing again!). If you wanted to lose weight from nutrion alone, you would have to eat 500 less than this number to lose 1lb per week (1300 cal). Now I like my food, so I'm not going to be able to survive on 1300cal a day. I make my limit 1500-1600 cal per day. I supplement this with exercise. 

When I go to the gym, I aim to burn 500-600cal, I easily do this by doing high intensity classes (Les Mills BodyAttack, and BodyPump are my favourite!) but I also supplement my days out of the gym with long walks, jogs, or BodyBalance. 

So, if I'm eating 1500cal in a day, but I'm burning 1800cal in a regular day - and my exercise burns an additional 500cal, I am in deficit of 800cal that day, not that I exercise every day (4 times a week) but in a week, if I burn 800cal for four days (3200 cal) and only 200 the other 3 days (600cal) then I have still lost an entire pound of fat (3800cal). 1lb of fat = 3500cal. 

Of course, there are exclusions - if you have to much salt, you will weigh more due to sodium retaining 50 times its weight in water, so when you eat more than 1500mg of sodium in a day, you can see the scale rise up to 2kg or 5lb overnight. 

Make the first baby step of figuring out how many calories are in your meals. Use a meal planner like MyFitnessPal or CalorieCount. Logging your meals and exercise are a great motivator. also, taking before pictures, measurements and weight and seeing the numbers drop monthly are a great motivation to keep going. I remember passing the 5kg mark (Yay! New Jeans!), 9kg mark (into a healthy BMI!) and the 10kg mark (OMG 10kg! That's like a sack of potatoes!), and hopefully beyond.

Goals 26-03-12

Pier 3 - Wellington

Last weeks goals feel by the wayside due to an unexpected cold and some pretty rough weather... Still recovering from said cold (tried to blow it away in the wind and sun today where I took this photo). So, without further ado, goals for this week: 

  1. Bring lunch every day this week to work (simple enough, have already prepared everything in advance, assembly is all that is required. Have a look at the yummy goodness here.
  2. Attempt to go to the gym 3 times and lightly work back into it while recovering from cold. 
  3. Since my boss had told me to purchase a coffee machine last week - brush up on my barista skills to make awesome coffee (machine is due to be delivered this week!). 


Sunny Sunday


After being morose and lazing in bed for the last 24 hours, I decided on a beautiful Wellington day like this, I would head out and try and 'blow the cobwebs away' as it were. 


I bought my camera, and had a stroll around Evan's Bay Parade. 

The Piers near my house are really lovely and serene. 


I decided it would be a good opportunity for doing a bit of photography...

Life.

I've always believed people come into your life for a reason - if it's to enrich it with laughter and joy, bring you pain and suffering so you know what that feels like and can learn from it, or to just be with someone who you can sit with and not say anything at all. 

I have one friend who has been with me since I was born (actually, before! Our mothers did pregnant yoga together!) who's always stuck with me through thick and thin, and while we now don't live in the same city, and there have been periods (i.e. primary school and uni) where we have hardly seen each other, we can still catch up for an afternoon and cover everything and still feel rock solid.

There are other people in my life, who I know, if I don't make the effort, I'll never see them, and I think that's a little sad as if I decide to let them and their friendship go, then that's their loss - I'm a ridiculously loyal friend when someone else is loyal to me. I'm also overly trustworthy, which can sometimes be detrimental. 

I'm one of those people who are people pleasers. I hate it when people are upset or angry with me - in fact, it gives me panic attacks (I swear, one time I thought a friend was annoyed at me because I said I liked the guy she liked and my heart rate was 110 and I was sitting down - you know who you are!). But then, as I've found out this past week, sometimes I need to make the cut, sever all ties to a person who is weighing me down. 

It's people who poison your thoughts, who make you feel bad about yourself and your actions that really need to look at themselves and see why they feel the need to make other people feel that way. It's also your responsibility to look after your own mental wellbeing and take the actions to keep you in a healthy and happy mindset. You can't let someone else's angst get you down.

Most Astounding

When I was 11 I wanted to be an astronaut. I still love going home where there aren't as many lights, and looking up at a clear sky and seeing my favourite constellations and the Milky Way.
