Three Weeks!






A few photo's I've taken this week with my new 35mm f1.8G lens - It's so nice! 1. Logan Brown's Bright Red doors - I had dinner here last week with work and some very well known political people, so I can't share who - but lets just say that you'd know who they were if I told you (New Zealanders). 2 & 3. Morning sunlight outside our window... also, a little bit smoky that time of the morning (around 7am). 4. A walk to the vege market past Joe's Garage - I love this building. 5. Fruits and veges at the Chafers Market - it was a beautiful morning this morning to go for a stroll. 

Today I've basically just tidied, did food prep (I made delicious pumpkin soup for my lunches this week! Om nom!) and lay in the sun in the lounge trying to soak up as much vitamin D as possible while listening to new music on spotify! This is my last 'free' weekend in Wellington - so I've made the most of it. Next weekend my parents are visiting to see me before I head off, and the weekend after that is my birthday! I'm having a high tea party and just a general catchup with everyone with thai takeaways for dinner and wine. Three weeks! xx

Paris Journal.

The Paris Journal is a beautiful app you can download from the App Store showcasing a day of wandering around different Parisian neighborhoods. The first edition takes you on an adventure throughout the beautiful and very famous district of Montmartre. This was the first district I knew of from the movie Moulin Rouge (still a strong favourite).

I absolutely love these photos because I am always enamoured by the details in street scenes - how the paint peels from a door or what lies beyond that closed gate? What is a nice surprise is that there are also some 'moving images' - almost short HQ GIF images that show moments such as the wind moving some shrubs, or a crepe being spread. 

If you want to spend a bit of time exploring the streets of Montmatre through your ipad or iphone, I strongly suggest downloading the app. You can then download a free preview before purchasing the first edition. I'm already looking forward to viewing the second edition!

Rain rain go away...







It's a very cold and rainy day here in Wellington. I have condensation on my windows that is dripping down onto my windowsill. It's cold. And wet. I did get out of the house this morning, however. 

The American (aka, girl who is wonderfully taking over my room and job while I'm in Europe for three months, while she left the summer of Orange County for this crappy weather - poor thing!) and I headed to Te Papa this morning for a bit of Kiwi Culture. My favourite parts of Te Papa is always the earthquake shack, but now that I've been in a similar size earthquake, it's not as exciting as when I was 11. I always enjoy the art exhibition up on level 5. It was a good activity to do on a rain Saturday morning. 

As I write this it is 27.5 days until I leave for Europe! These last few days are dragging, it seems - probably because of the cold weather! I can't wait to bask in beautiful sunlight and warmth! I sold my Nikon 50mm f1.8D lens that I had purchased with my Nikon D3200 without enough research (who knew the D series lenses only worked on camera's with motors in the body? I also didn't know when I purchased the camera that it had a cropped sensor, so my 50mm lens acted more like a 75mm lens). I bought a 35mm f1.8G series lens which on my camera actually acts like a 50mm, and as you can see from above, it's beautiful. I'll be bringing it with my to Europe and try to take some beautiful photos to share with you all. Editing will be the main issue when it comes to this as I'm not taking my MacBook. I have plenty of editing apps on my ipad though so we will have to see how it goes! It's a pity it's not a sunny winter day in Wellington otherwise I would be outside now getting some lovely shots. 

So all I am doing for the rest of the evening is keeping warm in my bed with copious amounts of tea and soup and watching movies. Keep warm everyone!

Paris... Je T'aime






I've absolutely, 110% fallen in love with Paris via these beautiful photos taken by the beautiful Carin, originally from Sweden. She moved to Paris for four months to learn the language, eat the food and experience the culture - and I can't think of anything more I want to do myself. Just thinking about renting an apartment in Paris for a month or two before I start working in the UK next year would be amazing. I've got so much wonderlust leading up to my travels that I just want to get on a plane and leave right now. 

I have so many things on my travel bucket list: 
  • Live in France for a time. 
  • Live and work in London
  • Live and work in the USA (NYC or California) 
  • Travel extensively

I wish I had unlimited funds! But I am totally looking forward to my three months in Europe - I can't wait for the sounds, smells, tastes, and visual candy I will be able to experience in a short 35 days.

Travel: Airport Style





I want to be looking Parisian Chic when I step off the plane in Paris, so I have been reading up on how to keep looking fresh and fabulous while on an extremely long-haul flight. 

For a starters, I leave New Zealand on a 6:30am flight to Sydney (a 3 1/2 hour flight), I then have a 1 hour layover, before getting onto my first long-haul flight to Seoul (10 1/2 hours). I have an 18 hour layover in Seoul where I am put up in a Hotel room (shower! bed! YAY!) before hopping on the last leg of my journey, a 12 hour flight to Paris. After 26 hours of flying, I'm fairly sure I will be in need of some beauty and fashion TLC. 

I'm going to stay up as late as possible the night I leave so that I am on Parisian time (12 hours behind NZ!) and take NO Jet lag pills as prescribed to help with my circadian rhythm. I will not be wearing any makeup on my flights, bar some mascara, a little lip tint and concealer. On the plane I will be wearing some comfy leggings, loose t-shirt and an over-sized cardigan to keep warm along with some comfy shoes such as Toms. 

In my carry-on luggage I will have a pair of comfortable blue jeans, an extra tank top, an extra couple of pairs of underwear (you never know if your luggage is going to be lost, heaven forbid!), a pair of stylish sunglasses, and a scarf. I will also be carrying a tube of BB Cream to look fresh on arrival into Paris, coconut oil as a moisturizer throughout the flight (the air conditioning on airplanes tend to dry your skin out) and my handy Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream.

Autumn Cleansing Part II.


Day two: 

Last night I went to bed with a bit of a headache, which is a common side effect of juice cleanses. I went to bed at 9pm and slept through my 8am juice - so I am now having it at 8:30 (pushing my next juice to 10:30am). I still have a slight headache this morning but I'm not hungry at all. My favourite juice of the lot - Yellow Hit came just when my body was protesting - I haven't had my stomach rumble so much in a long time! This one is so tasty! Slipped up a bit in the afternoon and had a couple of dates... just for something to chew on! 


Day three was at work and I was super busy so it was pretty easy to not think about food. My boss had stolen one of my green juices I'd left in the fridge at work over the weekend! So I went to the juice place down the road and got another one for my 4:30pm juice. The 'replacement me' at work and my flat for the upcoming three months arrived today from the big US of A, so I picked her up from the airport, and after work we went to the supermarket, which was a bit of torture and I overspent on things I wanted to eat (cheese, macadamia nuts). 


In the last three days I lost 2kg overall, and to be honest, it wasn't that hard as long as you keep busy. I felt full of energy on my third day and my sleep was great. I broke my fast this morning with an omelet with lots of green spinach and a bit of feta (not what you're usually supposed to have, but it was delish).  I'm going to keep eating lots of greens and fruit throughout today and the rest of the week, limiting meat intake. I'm looking forward to seeing if this is what my body needed to get back into gear! Hopefully I can get back down to my summer weight again in time for Europe!!

Autumn Cleansing.


I've been told the benefits of juicing for a while now, from my colleagues wife, to Dr. Libby Weaver, to watching the Juicing documentary Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead (watch it, it's eye-opening!). So a couple of weeks ago I took the plunge and bought a juicer. I've been having a juice a day pretty much since I bought it, and have been feeling much better for it (all those nutrients making me feel more alert!). I've been sleeping better, haven't been craving sweets, and have just felt more overall healthy. 

I was reading another blog called Julia & Libby, another Kiwi based blog which is all about health and wellbeing by these two beautiful sisters. They mentioned they did a three day juice cleanse by this company - PHD Cleanse (PHD = Pure Health Delivered). It's pretty expensive and time-consuming to do a juice cleanse by yourself, so these guys do it all for you, send you the juices anywhere in New Zealand, and off you go! 

I actually purchased a one day basic cleanse, thinking I'll try it for one day and see how I go - I got into the office on Friday and saw a huge box from PHD with 18 juices in it - the three day cleanse! I wasn't expecting that at all - but it was a nice surprise. So I have decided to do a blog post outlining how I'm feeling each day of the cleanse and what is happening with my body. The Basic Cleanse compromises of three green juices per day, one zesty lemonade, one yellow hit, and one cashew dream (the desert of the juices!). 

Each day I will be drinking the juices in this order:
  1. Pure green 8:00am 
  2. Yellow Hit 10:00am
  3. Pure green 12:30pm
  4. Zesty Lemonade 2:30pm 
  5. Pure green 4:30pm 
  6. Cashew dream 7:00pm 
Day 1: 

8:15am: first juice of the day - the Pure Green which consists of Cos Lettuce, Celery, Cucumber, Spnach, Kale, Parsley, Lemon and Green Apple. Actually pretty tasty considering the amount of greenery!! The lemon and green apple give a nice tart sweetness to the juice. This juice is the most active juice in the range, and aims to alkalise your system. I will be having three of these a day so I'm glad they taste good! 10am: Juice number 2: the super tasty Yellow Hit - Pineapple, apple and mint. I feel like I could have this as a cocktail it's so tasty. Feeling a little hungry, but probably because I have been rushing around all morning cleaning the house! After my next juice at 12:30 I'm meeting up with some friends at a cafe for a 'coffee' - I'll have a herbal tea. Then I'm going to BodyBalance - hopefully I won't faint! 

12:30pm: juice three down the hatch! Off to catch up with the girls. I had a pot of peppermint tea at the cafe, while my friends sipped lattes and had brownies & macarons - which was super tempting but I stuck to my guns!

3:00pm: the next juice is Zesty Lemonade, missed my 2:30pm time as I was half way through my bodybalance class. Didn't faint. Stomach rumbled about 15 minutes into the class. The lemonade is tasty though!

5:00pm: Number 5. Another Green juice. Wanting to chew something and my flatmate is making a leg of lamb and a banoffee pie which is just mean. Looking forward to my dessert juice!

7:00pm: Dessert time! Cashew dream - Cashew, Agave, Cinnamon, Vanilla and water. Yum! It's super delish! It's been worth the wait to have something a bit more substantial... I've been wanting to eat something and this is almost like a smoothie.

Day one down - I'll let you know how I feel by the end of this in a separate blog post. I just went around my day as usual - no big changes for a Saturday! I'm looking forward to seeing how I feel at the end of the next two days.

Hi guys! It's been a while, I'm sorry - life has been pretty hectic lately! Here are a few snaps from my life over the last month.

Here's what's been happening health-wise: 
  • I've been off caffeine since April 25th - with the exception of one cup that I desperately needed. 
  • I bought myself a juicer and have been juicing for a few weeks - I feel like I have so much more energy! I'm getting a lot more nutrients from the fruits and vegetables I've been juicing. 
  • My flatmate and I went to the Wellington Food Show - which was awesome! We saw Josh Emett cook duck (I now have some organic duck legs in the freezer I'm going to confit), and saw and met Dr. Libby Weaver, who's book, Accidentally Overweight, I talked about in my last blog entry. I also bought her new book, The Real Food Chef  which is a beautiful book and I'm looking forward to incorporating some of the recipes into my diet.
  • I've been remembering to breathe more often - this is hard for someone like me who likes to be busy and rush around a lot and get everything done - but I've realized it's impacting my health more than it should. Try to remember to take 20 deep breaths a day - in the morning before getting up and before going to sleep seems to work for me! 
  • I've been going to BodyBalance two to three times a week, and loving how it's making me feel. 
  • I've stopped counting calories - calories in vs. calories out is such a mind-fuck. Two years of doing it and thinking that that's the only way I'll ever lose weight - I was kidding myself and screwing up my metabolism all the while. 
  • I'm eating intuitively now - eating something my body craves when it wants it. I don't feel restricted anymore because of this - I know I can have a bit of dark chocolate, and I'll only have a bit, because I know I can have it and I'm not going to kick myself because I 'went over my calorie allowance'. So. much. freedom. 
  • Thinking of doing a three day juice fast at some stage soon. Might do a one day juice fast tomorrow. 
  • I'm increasing the amount of plant-based foods to my diet dramatically - only having meat in the evenings. Loving soup at this time of year too! 
So it has been a busy time healing... rewiring my brain to think differently about food. 

Work has also been busy - we headed to Blenheim last week for a work lunch, which was a nice break from the office. This week I'm back up to Auckland for a conference/function. I have been a bit off my game lately at work though - which has annoyed me because usually I don't let things slip through my fingers and I'm a bit of a Type A personality (that's an understatement). My replacement is coming to NZ in a week or so, which is exciting! She's also moving into my flat while I'm gone which is very useful! I think we'll get along fabulously! Definitely looking forward to this trip - I need it.
